I am not able to select "conditional formatting" (it is dimmed out) when the 
multiple cells are selected. By the way the cells are disconnected. They do 
not touch each other. They are selected with cntl click.

Select the 81 cells.

One of them is the active cell. It has the square around it. Let's say C6.

In the conditional formatting dialog - select Function is   ...

ISNUMBER(FIND("S";C6))=TRUE
