Perhaps the problem is that OpenOffice is becoming popular with people who are very new to computers, and those of us who are very familiar with computers forget what it's like to not understand the terminology.

I think that's precisely the problem. And it isn't going to go away with new wording... it will get better, hopefully, but it will never go away.

IMNSHO, the whole deal -- the dialog box -- should go away completely. It serves very little useful purpose. The behavior of the installation script should be as follows:

1. If there are no existing associations for doc, xls, or ppt files then the installer should automatically and silently create them and point them to OOo.

2. If there are *any* existing associations for those file types the installer should automatically and silently *leave them alone*, _except_ in the case of...

3. If associations exist and point to an older install of OOo, then the installer should automatically and silently re-associate to the new version of OOo.

The current system should be retained as a step during a "Custom" installation, but not for a standard install.

The current system is a minor convenience to a minority of users -- those who for one reason or another are installing OOo fresh alongside MSO and *know* that they want OOo to automatically open their files -- while being a major, and surpising, PITA for many and a useless mouse click for the rest.
