"Opened the program". I think this needs to be explained in a bit more
detail. If it is "installed" correctly you will have a new entry
"OpenOffice.org 2.0" under"(All) Programs" in the start menu. Look in
there for"Writer". If writer starts ok, you will be able to get stuck
in. This is the word processor.
If on the other hand you have no new entries in the start menu then you
need to install the program. There is a manual for that here:

No thats Microsofts shit. Word is the name of Microsofts Word Processor.
OO.o's word processor is called Writer. Thus a "Word" program is
Microsofts word processor. What you wanted was an alternative "word
processor".

I reckon as a new user you will then need to investigate other manuals
to appreciate fully the great suite you have downloaded. Many wonderful
things of that ilk can be found here:
