Here is what I do:

When I drag down, I keep the Ctrl key pressed. Very easy and works fine for me.

What you can do: copy the cel, select other cels, and paste.

The feature is AutoFill, but it sounds like you're trying to enter a
single value all the way down.  It's simple and I use it
all the time, just enter the desired value ie; 5  in the first three
or four cells in the column.  Highlight those cells and you'll
see a small black box in the lower right corner of those highlighted
cells.  Grab it with the mouse and drag it down and
you'll have a column of "5's".

Good Hunting.

PS,  this works with pretty much any PATTERN you enter in the first
few cells, ie; odd numbers, dates, etc.....  OOo is
pretty intuitive here.
