Lauren,
In as far as spell checking and a word counter, those are already a part
of OpenOffice. On my version of oOO, it's on the button with the ABC
and the green check mark underneath it, and Auto SpellCheck (a red wavy
line underneath misspelt words) is turned on by default. You can get
the word count to show up by going to Insert->Fields... and selecting
the word option.
