In which format have you saved the file? .odt? If yes, then your friend
need OpenOffice.org or KOffice or Abiword for reading it. Microsoft
programs can't handle the files in the opendocument-format. 

But when you safe the file, you can choose a .doc or .rtf-format. In
this case, your friend don't need to download OpenOffice.org.
