If you mean insert a column into a spread sheet
then place the cursor in the column that is to follow the inserted column
go to menu bar click on Insert, then on the dropdown menu click on column icon.

If you mean sum a column a numerical figures
then format the column cells for number, insert you numbers, click the cell in 
the 
column where you want the resulting sum, then click on the sigma icon, in the 
tool 
bar (just above the B column)
