Yes.

Use HTML codes and save the file with extension ".HTM" or extension ".HTML".

For example, a file named FORMAT_TEST.HTML containing the text "The quick brown <i>fox<\i> jumps over the lazy <b>dog<\b>." when opened by Writer will display without the tags, with the word "fox" in italics, and the word "dog" in boldface.

This trick also works with MS Word.

Oops! My error. It should indeed by "/" not "\". I haven't programmed in HTML for about 6 months.
