Well, I found a copy of Student, and with only OpenOffice.org installed
(well, no other office suite, and specifically no MSO of any kind) it
installed and ran just fine. The encyclopedia, calculator, toolbar (for the
XP taskbar), chart maker, and other stuff works fine. It's a stand-alone
program.

There is a section for "learning esentials for Office" which won't work
without MSOffice XP or 2003. And there's a button to launch MS Word, which
doesn't work without MS Word installed. But for the educational content,
you don't need MSO at all. For MS to list Office as a "system requirement"
is not true. You don't get everything without it, but you do get a lot of
stuff.

It actually seems pretty slick, to me. But I've always liked "shiny
boxes." I still don't think it's worth the money, but for people who don't
know about Wikimedia, and/or don't have the Internet, it may be worth it.

But, to answer the orginial question of "Is OOo compatible with MS Student?"
the answer is no - but that doesn't mean you need MS Office to run Student,
either.
