Would this work if I wanted to put the page number in the centre of the page on the
outside margin (changes from right to left margin).
I have used a very good reference manual that placed the page number about 2/3
down on the outside margin plus moved a bar with chap number down the margin
on the right page and a reference on the left page. Very easly to find things.
Yes, you could do what you want using the frames technique. I
don't have time right now to go into the details, but it's easy
enough that I could set it up faster than explain how to do it.
