I am using openoffice.org 2.0 Writer. I am an editor, I must have
my em dashes. I also need en dashes, they have two separate
meanings in writing. Can't they just be included in the symbols?
Just out of curiousity, what's an em and en dash?
An em dash is the width of an 'm' character. Guess what an en dash is.
This is what I thought. Not knowing too much about the distinction I just
lurked.
But now I know some of the difference in typography (size but not how) I would like
to know the differences in use.
We should probably look at the differences in ( ) [ ] { } < >, as they are not all
parentheses, or brackets.

If you wish to know the differences and proper uses of various
punctuation marks, I would highly recommend a book entitled, Eats,
Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss. It is the best book about punctuation
that I have ever seen, is very readable, and humorous as well. There is
a whole chapter on the various kinds of dashes and brackets. I promise
you, you won't go to sleep reading this book.
