I need to be able to put a checkmark in a document. I don't want to use
a form field, as the box shows up.
Can anyone point me to a Font in Windows that has a checkmark, or is it
possible to turn off the box so that while the checkmark prints the box
doesn't. (The other problem I have with using a form field is my printer
is printing an X rather than a checkmark.)
The only standard Windows font with a check mark is Webdings. ( See
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/font.aspx?FID=5&FNAME=Webdings )
The disadvantage to using this font is that the check mark is coded as
U+F061, private use Unicode range, and the many non-Windows users who do
not have this font will not see the character properly. This may not
matter if you want your check mark for hard copy printouts, or to
distribute in PDF format, or only intend it to be seen on Windows machines.
You can also use one of the two check marks from the Open Symbol font
that is installed with OpenOffice. These have the proper Unicode
assignments of U+2713 (CHECK MARK) and U+2714 (HEAVY CHECK MARK) and may
be visible to anyone who has any large Unicode font on their system
which supports these character, for example many of the ones listed as
having the Dingbat characters at
