Paul replied directly to me, without replying to the list, it seems. So, for

can be. (The snags come from the Dragon - I need to get more sophisticated
at using the software but they are minimal at worst. I found some guy on

microphone and sound card to improve the accuracy of the transcribing
process.) So as you said "that's good" !!!!!
When setting up and installing Dragon I didn't even come across anything
asking me to state what word management program I'm using - I just installed
it and, after doing the initial set-up and training, started dictating by
opening my different patient's files. No problems! I just finished an hour
or so of work on Dragon and all went well.
I have not tried to use Dragon to control menus yet - I'll let you know what
I come up with whenever I give it a try.
Give Dragon a try for yourself - I bought the bare-bones version (I think
the fancier versions just have more trade-specific dictionaries and more
form letters in them) for $99 from a retail office supply store.

I use Naturally Speaking Preferred Version 8 on Windows XP and Dragon
complains that it is dictating into a "non-standard window" when I use
it in OpenOffice (1.1.5 or 2.0.1). Being in a non-standard window means
that you can't use voice commands to edit anything except the last
phrase. That is, under MS Word, I can say "select Jones" and it will
hunt through the document to find an instance of Jones. I can then
dictate "Smith" instead or tell Dragon to "correct" or "spell that." I
lose so much functionality dictating into OOo that I use MS Word for
that (and generally only for that). It is also possible to dictate into
DragonPad (like notepad) where all commands work, then cut-and-paste
into OOo paragraph by paragraph. Since I'm dictating reports which can
be 13-20 pages long and I have a number of styles set up, this doesn't
work for me.
Not a complaint, just information.
