Another possibility is that your files are being saved without extensions (the ".doc" and ".xls" referred to above). If that's the case, your computer can't tell what program should open the files because those extensions are how it knows what program should open the file. There is a checkbox in the Save As dialog that says, "Automatic file name extension" (this is right below the "Save as type:" box). If the "Automatic file name extension" box isn't checked, try checking it. That way, no matter what format you save the document in, OpenOffice will add the extension it needs for that format.
