Dan, thanks for pointing this out/reminding us that this exists. Turning
pair kerning on for the Default paragraph style might solve the problem
for me.

Oddly (at least in OOo2.0.1), unlike all the others in the list, the
Default *character* style can't be modified using the drop-menu (right-
click on Default). However, I found that it's possible to modify it (and
thus all Default character style text in the document) using New Style
>From Selection(icon)>Update Style.

[That is: Format>Styles and Formatting>Character Styles(icon)>New Style
>From Selection(icon)>Update Style.]

Now I just need to find out how to I can set this up as my default
template with the modified style.
