Would using footnotes rather than endnotes work for you ?
Also note that with footnotes the numbering is Arabic.

I think this is still a feature to be implemented as yet. However,
there is a work-around available that is mentioned on the OOo
knowledgebase at http://mindmeld.cybersite.com.au. Do a search
for Endnote and it is probably the most prominent one.
