Hello All
I am all in favor of an alternative software to Microsoft Office suite.
However, before I download OpenOffice software, I'd like to know
1. when I open documents I've previously created with Microsoft Office in
OpenOffice, does the formating go pearshaped?
That's obviously the goal. In a large majority of cases, this is exactly
how it works. In cases where there are conversion problems, you should
file a bug report at http://www.openoffice.org/issues/
There's no point stating "I won't use it unless it's perfect". How would
it become perfect if everyone took this approach from the start. You
should try it out and see anyway.
We use OpenOffice on 75% of desktops here at work. We use MS Office in
cases where we have complex legacy code in Visual Basic that I don't
have the time or inclination to port to OOBasic. There used to be minor
formatting issues when moving from MS Office to OOo and back, but since
the release of OOo-2.0, compatibility has been remarkable.
2. reciprocally, when I save my OpenOffice Documents as Microsoft Office
docs, and send them to people who will open them with Microsoft Office
software, will the format of my docs be absolutely identical to the format
it used to have when I created them in Open Office?
See above.
If you can assure me that everything will be alright, I'll sign up with joy!
No assurances, no. Microsoft don't even offer assurances that different
versions of their own office package will interoperate perfectly.
I really am sorry but I haven't got the development knowledge to tweak the
OpenOffice software myself to make sure these problems don't happen-)
Maybe you can't code, but I'm sure you can test and file bug reports as
you encounter issues.
