If you are getting an error from bzcat() it is likely the download image
is corrupt. Please check the downloaded file with md5sum and check the
result against the known good md5sum list linked on the OOo download
page.
Yes! That was it! Somehow, the first time I downloaded it, FTP (command
line) cut off in the middle and I didn't notice. I should have made sure
there was a confirmation message from FTP instead of just seeing the prompt
come back. I downloaded it again, checked the MD5, and installed it. It's
working fine now.
I didn't appreciate much that it sent about 15 emails to "root" saying that
it installed each piece of OOo succssfully (which each got forwarded to
about 20 people), but that's a different issue :) I don't quite get the
logic of that "feature". The person installing the software is the one who
cares whether it installed successfully or not, and they are going to see
that info right on their screen. What is the point of broadcasting that to
the world? I always thought "privacy" was one of the values of the Open
Source community.
