There are two checks you should always do when you see something like
that:
1. Do a completely thorough operating system check, make sure your OS
is working and functioning completely well. This is one kind of
diagnostic check; use whatever utilities available and take your time.
Of course, if one was prescient there would be a perfect and reliable
backup available of the OS and essential documents -- before this
situation happened, just in case situations like this happen.
Although one doesn't yet know if it is a problem with the OS, to be
prepared in case it may be is a strong strategy of precaution allowing
one to return more quickly to normal operations (whatever that may be
for you).
2. Let's suppose your diagnostics report that everything is fine.
Remember that is only true to the extent of what they are instructed to
look at. The next step is to look into the details of OO and run it's
own diagnostics. You may not be able to, as it appears it may not have
downloaded completely. The best approach is to download and reinstall.
Before you do so however, this time recheck you cables, wires, network
settings, protocols you are using, your ISP service -- insure they are
not having problems, perhaps you missed a message from them advising you
about a matter. If all these check out well, perhaps you can improve
them slightly -- move from dial-up to the highest bandwidth you can
afford.
Saving money is an illusion if you are not also saving time.
You only have a certain amount of breaths in this world; use them
efficiently. Thinking that way should refocus your attention to the
essentials in a lot of ways, you'll also make better choices and
strategies with the technical issues with the technology you implement.
Your technology will thank you with a higher order of performance over a
longer period of time. As in most things in the strange universe we
merely are "passing through", you keep them happy -- they will keep you
happy.
If the above preparations have been done; one more thing before you
begin to download again. Read the technical documentation and
advisements regarding downloading Open Office. Are there any components
you should download in combination or in sequence? Follow those
advisements for the operating system you use. Once you are better
informed regarding what you are downloading, the next step is to insure
that all these incoming files are all going to be downloaded to one
place in one directory which is isolated from all others. Did you set
up your browser's download manager so that all downloads go to this one
such place and did you create within your directory structure one such
protected and isolated place?
If all this is ready, then proceed with download and installation, one
more time.
Good Luck ...
