I am not the best person to answer this, but...
When you set outline numbering to use a specific numbering, etc, then
the styles that you choose are shown in things such as the navigator.
This is why I use outline numbering to specify the styles that I use.
Setting numbering for outline numbering simply makes life easier and
offers no other benefits that I see. On the other hand, there is a draw
back because you can only specify one numbering type.
Now, I use outline numbering to set the styles that I use.
I have a chapter numbering scheme for chapters.
I have an appendix numbering scheme for my appendices.
The draw back is that I must manually set the numbering scheme for each
heading that should be numbered.
The advantage, is that I can use numeric numbering for chapters, and
alpha numbering for each appendix.
