The following approach doesn't seem to work.

1) Open new file using the template that has the styles I want.
2) Copy and paste the other doc into the new file.

I would have thought that the styles in the new file would override the
ones in the doc being pasted but that doesn't seem to be the case. I have
to select each paragraph and double-click the style name.

Am I doing something wrong?

Suggestion: try this for step 2: copy and paste special. The Paste Special window opens with several choices. Choose Unformated text. Click OK. This removes the styles of the copied text. What is pasted will have the styles of the new document into which it is pasted.

Thanks but that's not it either. That is, all the formatting has been removed and
now everything is Body Text". There's nothing to show me what was originally
designated as Heading 1, etc.

I'm looking for a method that would replace the definitions of the styles in one doc with the definitions in the template.
