Well, it seems that some Linux distros (like Kanotix) that come with OO2, do
not come with a 'full install'. I noticed that the Debian openoffice.org
meta package was not installed, nor was openoffice.base. The meta package
installs some arcane and obscure libs that I didn't have (about 7 of them).
Once I did apt-get install openoffice.org these libs and other voodoo
programs :-) got installed and guess what.... the file opened just fine. 

Lesson to be learned. If your distribution comes with OO2, you might
consider reinstalling it anyway to make sure you get all the libs, files,
and other stuff you need (and there is a lot of it!!!)
