Sorry if I'm getting into this thread a little late.

I am thinking of trying out a dual-book with Windows and Linux.

Does anyone know where I can get one of these CDs (or ISO I have someone
download) and which Linux would be best for someone Linux stupid?
there are several Good Linux Distros for new Users:
SUSE Linux http://opensuse.org
Red Hat (or Fedora Core as its known now).
http://www.redhat.com/en_us/USA/fedora/ Good for new users, but not sure if
fedora has a "live cd" version.
Fedora Core 4 is the current "non-test" version (Fedora Core 5 is expected
in mid-late March with FC5T3 just released) will not run from CD and
requires multiple CDs or a DVD for installation. FC4 came with 00o 2.0
Beta and I've been able to easily upgrade to the latest verson of OOo.
I'm sure that FC5 will come with the latest version of OOo, and will be as
easy to maintain/upgrade. That said, a live-cd version of Linux will give
you a feel for the system and it is very handy to have. I recently hosed
my /home directory, and used Knoppix to fix things so that I could get
things back up and running. Knoppix is the KDE version with Gnoppix the
Gnome version.
However, you must be aware that a distribution that runs from the CD will be
VERY slow, so don't judge performance by that. Also it may not "from the CD"
run and see all your hardware properly, like it would if you edited the right
config file.
I've not had any unbearable slowdowns running Knoppix from CD, but then I
run FC4 on a low end machine.
Having a partition on which you can install Linux is much better.
Yes it is better, but I'd still recommend playing around with a live-cd to
help you learn a bit about how Linux works, what's available... what you
like (Gnome or KDE), and to have on hand in case something gets hosed.
