The usefulness of this ability is not in question. The
implementation, however, may have some room for improvement.
There was a discussion some time back about perhaps separating
the language property from the general Styles framework or in
some other way making this stuff more intuitive and user-friendly.

To my way of thinking, a style is something that should change the
appearance of the text in some way. And, in fact, that's what very
nearly every option, check box, and radio button in a styles dialog
accomplishes. The Language, on the other hand, assuming it doesn't
require a different symbol set, is a different kind of property --
a mostly invisible property. Depending on the precise choice of
words in a passage it can be impossible to tell by visual
inspection whether it is written in US or UK English (or Canadian,
or Australian, etc.).
What's happening over and over is that people will find a language
setting somewhere, like in the Spellcheck dialog and then be
mystified as to why it doesn't work. Because intuitively, if you
tell the thing to check the document using UK English, then that's
what it should do.
The problem seems to be the same though, most people think the styles
is the wrong
method as once they set the language it should "just work" for them.
Unfortunately, as
GRS pointed out some people need more than one language used in their
document.
This cannot be done by simply setting an option in the Tools menu.
The program needs
to know what parts of the document are in which language, and styles
so far seem to
be the best option for me.
