This is a very common scam, usually from someone claiming to be a member of the Nigerian government. The crazy thing is, it's one of the most profitable scams going. There's a sucker born every minute.

I wish I could find it again, but some time ago (2-3 years?), there was a website someone put up that chronicled one guy's "adventure" with one of these scams. He replied to it in jest, then started playing along, acting as if he was sending messages from an international cafe, etc. It was pretty funny. Reminds me of the Powerbook Prank: http://www.zug.com/pranks/powerbook/
