FWIW,
I use Linux at work so I do not have access to MS Office. I exchange
documents all the time with MS Office users. If I have to give read
only copies of documents, I give them a PDF.
If I have to make copies they can edit, I give them MS Office
formatted documents, at least the ones that don't have OpenOffice on
their computers.
Also note that we have people that write technical documents and are
finding OpenOffice 2.0 is a much better software package to doing this
as they have much more control over the formatting and are getting
better productivity.
My wife's business uses OpenOffice on Mac, Linux and Windows to ensure
compatibility for formatting. Even between different versions of
Windows they had problems with formatting.
I also give copies of OpenOffice to anyone that needs a really
powerful office suite for their home.
