No Microsoft software will or can (yet) change OOo (OpenOffice.org)
files.

Can they open them at all?

Same way any other Windows program is uninstalled.

The explanation of your problem is not very clear, but it sounds like
you are opening or creating something (eg. document, spreadsheet or
presentation) in OOo and saving it in the OOo default file format and
emailing it as an attachment to someone who does not have OOo installed
on their computer. If this is the case you have three options:

1. Use the menu "File -> Save As..." and select the file format type of
your recipient's software (eg. MS Word) from the "File type" drop down
list.

2. If your recipient only needs to read the attachment and does not need
to edit or change it, use the menu "File -> Export As PDF".

3. The best option is to give your recipient a copy of OOo to install on
their computer.

If this is not the case, then please reply to this list, giving specific
details of the steps you are taking to create the file(s) you are
emailing.

Hope this helps.

Dave
