It is a compliment, what it really means is:
Microsoft is worried that OpenOffice is a credible competitor to MS
Office.
It also raises the profile of OpenOffice slightly.
The biggest mistake that can be made is to fall into the 'feature by feature'
comparison trap.
Different products solve similar problems in their own way, each will have it's
own unique/better
features ... which is another way of saying that each DOES NOT have some
feature that the
other does.
What is important is: does it do what the userbase need it to do to ?
By that metric: MS Word 97 was good enough for the vast majority of us.
Remember that, to an extent, proprietary s/ware vendors rely on curn --
convincing
people that the need to upgrade.
