2. Is OpenOffice out of date? 2. IS OPENOFFICE OUT OF DATE? Microsoft honcho, Alan Yates says that OpenOffice is ten years out of date! His comments about OpenOffice flushed out the usual anti-Microsoft suspects. Sounds outrageous and was probably intended to grab a headline. You can argue about the timeline but he's right that there's no product that is as developed and comprehensive as Microsoft Office. But does that matter for many people? While Microsoft focuses on server linkages and team collaboration tools there are plenty of people who haven't caught up with that technology and maybe don't need it. If your needs are modest then OpenOffice.org is worth a look, especially at the very low price. Email can be handled with Outlook Express or one of the many other email clients out there. On the other hand, many people don't make use of features in Office that would benefit them a lot - the learning curve is steep and time is short. For many years the real competition for Microsoft Office has been earlier versions of the same product. It's harder and harder for customers to justify the high cost of upgrading Office. Microsoft can take shots at their competitors but they know that their biggest rival is their own success.
