That part, at least, works great, as all the pictures are
linked rather than copied into the document. Changing a
picture is just right-click, find new picture (which is in
the same directory), clickety-click, done.

(Linking the pix means I can fiddle with them and OO will
pick up the new version automagically. I like that.)

An earlier note from Jean (who should know!) suggested:

That's the blindingly obvious part I hadn't figured out. I
like that kind of answer because my ignorance is readily
fixed... faster than fixing program code, anyway.

Mirabile dictu, linked frame styles actually work (unlike
linked page styles, drat), so I can have minor tweaks on a
basic frame style: bottom, top, upper-right, lower-right.

After some fiddling, I think the process boils down to:

Insert Picture, clickety-click to select image from disk
Clickety-click to apply a frame style
Right-click Add Caption
Typety-type caption text
Click Options Character Style [Caption Characters]
to boldify the "Photo N" field
OK OK

There seems to be no way to set the default character style
for the automagic field that carries the Photo number; it
wants to be [None] in the worst way. Am I missing something
obvious again?

Anyhow, that's only marginally more clickety-clicking than I
used to do, with the distinct advantage that it doesn't
blow up. I can cope with that...

Thanks to all!
