Any advice?

Can you give us some info ?

What version of OpenOffice.org ?

        It says OpenOffice.org 2.0

What operating system ?

        This is Linux:
        Fedora Core 1
        [EMAIL PROTECTED] kerr]$ uname -a
        Linux jacinth.boisestate.edu 2.4.22-1.2199.nptlsmp #1 SMP Wed
        Aug 4 11:48:29
        EDT 2004 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
        [EMAIL PROTECTED] kerr]$

What is the exact problem you are experiencing ?

Only the scalc subset seems to work as it's supposed
        to:

Attempts to do >New Text File, or attempts to open a
word-processor file cause an immediate OpenOffice
disappearance. The "calc" subset appears to be working just
        fine, however.

Lately I've found that I can use swriter if I FIRST
open an existing .sxc file. In this context, the >New
Text File business seems to work, and I can even open
        MSWORD .doc files.

I have not yet successfully used the formula writer --
this is more likely a user-learning problem.
