I had notice, on occasion, several versions ago, that sometimes when
I saved a file as rtf, then went back to work on it, it was no
longer there. What I got was a single empty page, marked "1 of 1",
with no text on it at all.

At that time, I took to saving in .sxw, .doc. and .rtf, to make sure
I had the files.

The problem is that several publishers want to see submissions in
.rtf only. Tonight, going through a submission for a publisher, I
found four files at least which were invisible.
The table said they had 63k, 36k, or whatever, but nothing showed on
the screen.

What's happening?

Furthermore, most of the reloaded .rtf files have lost their
formatting. This is a serious problem for a writer. If I can't
depend on my files to actually be there, and be in the format in
which I saved them, I'm in trouble.
And which version did you use to save the files? If it was a beta
version, then this could be the source of the problem. Are you using
the version of OOo that is upgraded via your OS distro update
mechanism? If yes, this could also be part of the problem.
So we need more info to help you. I, for one, cannot reproduce the
problem with RTF files that I saved with 1.1.0 let alone anything
later.
Sorry.

I'm using Open Office version 2.0, working on Ubuntu. I am _not_
using the Ubuntu version, as it had no Thesaurus.
Thanks,

A little more data. The files are still there, (the .rtf files) but
nothing shows on writer when I attempt to open them. However, I can
open them in other text editors, which of course shows all the
formatting code as well, but doesn't do the formatting.

Any useful suggestions?

Could you send me one of the files? I would like to look at one.

Thanks for the offer. I was looking around to find the method for "repairing" OpenOffice (some things on Ubuntu are not quite so straightforward as they are on Mandrake) and in the course of this, opened the program from the exec file rather than the icon. Just on a whim, I then tried to open the troublesome file, and it opened, as did all the other files that weren't working. After that, the file then opened properly in all instances of OpenOffice.

Don't know what went wrong, but it's one of those sporadic things, and I don't expect it's reproducible by anyone. If I sent the file to you, even before I finally got it opened, I suspect your response would be, "It works fine here."

Thanks again for the offer,

JimW
