There are two things I do to do this:
1. Change the master document for handouts to 6 per page. It seems like
you did this. If not, select the Handouts tab under the main toolbars,
then select the 6 per page picture on the right.
2. To print handouts, you need to select Options from the print dialog
(File->Print) and the check off the handout check box. If you only want
to print the handouts, uncheck any of the others.
I think that should do it.
