I am using Version 2.0.2 of OpenOffice.org My problem is:

Are there any shortcuts to use while typing in "Write"?

I often type in Spanish, and when I use Microsoft Word, I can just hit some
combinations of CTRL and ALT to get certain characters.

Are there shortcuts like that- instead of going through the whole process
of INSERT, SPECIAL CHARACTERS, and selecting one?

I notice that there are codes in the lower right hand corner of the
character box... do they mean anything?

Thank you.

Cbeck out the HOW-TO section at http://documentation.openoffice.org/ for the guide you need,

It outlines a number of ways to get what you want

Search google for a list of the alt + key pad codes eg alt+0123 gives { alt+224 gives Ó

If you cannot find a list ask again and I will supply one.

This can be done a bit easier with a program called AllChars. It's free and it seems like the programmer is going to make it Open Source to. http://allchars.zwolnet.com/

It is supposed to work on any application, and on my PC it really does too.

It works like this:
Let's say we want to type a copyright character ©. All you have to do is to press Ctrl, release it again, then press c and then o. This is somewhat easier to remember than Alt+0169.

I use it all the time and it works great for me (AllChars 3.6.2 on Windows 98). However, my girlfriend (AllChars 3.6.2 on Windows XP) has to turn it off when using GIMP if she doesn't want GIMP to crash. I don't have that problem on my PC. There is a patch to download which we didn't try yet (3.6.3), so maybe that problem can be solved...

You can not only type special characters very easily, you can also create macros responding to a user defined character, in my case "<". So if I enter "<ja" AllChars will replace that with "Johnny Andersson" if I enter it quick enough (max 800 ms between each character, but that can be defined by the user too). Things like \t (Tabulator) and \n (New line) also works. I have a macro typing my whole address for me. Well, I guess all this info can be found at http://allchars.zwolnet.com/

Best regards
Johnny Andersson
