I need to create a table in Writer that is a table of contents for a long
textbook, broken down according to subtopics with the amount of time the
instructor is to spend on each subtopic, and then the total for each
chapter. I have it set up like this:
Chapter
Topic 1
Topic 2
Topic 3 ... etc.
I want the total time for Topic 1 ... Topic n to appear to the right of the
Chapter at the top, in the rightmost column. The Topics will be in a column
just to the left. That is, there are columns A, B, C, and D. Column C is for
the Topic time and column D is for the Chapter total time. Columns A and
B are formatted just text. Columns C and D are formatted as time.
The first problem is getting the dang formula toolbar to stay put. As soon
as I click on the big green arrow to insert the formula, the formula toolbar
disappears. Thus, if I get the formula wrong I have to go back to Table >
Formula to get it back. And when it comes back it shows a different cell.
This is driving me nuts. (And no, I don't want to do this in Calc, as this is
part of a long text file.) Is there some way to get the formula toolbar to stay
there? Or at least always pop up when the cursor is in a cell that has a
formula?
And while I'm at it, is there a way to copy and paste a formula? Like, could
I create the formula for Chapter 1, then copy and paste it into the cell
where I want the total for Chapter 2 to appear, and manually edit which
cells it is to sum? I've tried copying from the formula toolbar and from the
cell, but neither works. I've also tried the Sum (the big SUM sign) from the
table toolbar, but it can't seem to grasp that I want the sum for the
*selected cells* placed into the cell where the cursor is located. Best it
can do is place it to the right of the bottommost of the selected cell. That
would be fine if I could copy and paste the formula from that cell to the cell
at the top of the chapter list.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I need to get this finished and sent
out!
