You suggest that I right click the style in use from the Paragraph Styles
menu-- but this can't be done from an Apple/Mac.

I searched through the instruction manual, and the help index, to try and
figure out how to "enable kerning" - and didn't come up with a solution.

Sorry for being so dense, but is there anyone that can help me please resolve
this problem?

Best,

Jon

I supect that you need to enable kerning in OOo. It is off by default.
The easy way to correct this is to modify the paragraph style you use.
To do so, open the Styles toolbar, select paragraph styles ( usually the
first icon on the left), locate the style in use and right click to
bring up the context menu and select modify. Now go to the Position tab
and near the bottom right is a check box labelled Pair kerning, enable
it by clicking in the box. This should correct the odd spacing. Lastly
that kerning is off by default is an existing RFE but I forget the
number.
