Any chnace your 90 Day eval just ended ???
You might want to try downloading OpenOffice.org as an alternative to
to MS office before you empty the piggy bank -- you will be able to
read .ppt files.

If you are missing essential cabs from your OS or whatever, I suggest
that you should fix this first.
As to using OOo for opening PowerPoint files, yes it will do so
providing that your system is in good shape.
