Depends on what the recipient has installed. the safest is RTF, which
will open in Word/Office or, usually (flat file only for databases)
AppleWorks. ZIP files open in both OS 9 (with the free Stuffit Expander
installed) or OS X (expansion built-in to the OS). If the recipient has
neither Office nor AppleWorks, you are stuck with a text file, or in the
case of a database/spreadsheet, a tab-delimited text file. Ask your
recipient first what software they want to open it in. Macs are pretty
flexible about formats, but don't send it in an OpenOffice native format
unless your recipient also has OOo or NeoOffice installed. In any case,
it should be compressed in ZIP format after saving in the format that
they will ultimately open it in. On the off-chance that you have Stuffit
Standard for Windows installed, it can compress files in SIT format,
which is good for OS 9 users and those who have Stuffit Expander
installed on OS X. ZIP files require Stuffit in OS 9, but open natively
in OS X.
