Hi,

in Excel one can move rows and columns by mouse.
Mark the cells then grab them by mouse and shove them where they should be.
That works in Calc, too provided one wants to overwrite the target-area.

In Excel I can press SHIFT and move the marked cells. Excel would then automaticallly make room for the moved cells without overwriting.

E.G. Suppose I have rows 1 to 10.

In Excel:
I mark row 6-9 by mouse.
Then I press and hold SHIFT and move the marked block up to row 2.
The resulting rows show the content: 1,2, 6,7,8,9, 3,4,5, 10

In Calc:
I first have to insert 4 empty rows below row 2.
Then mark rows 6-9
Move them up in the newly created gap.
Erase the gap where the rows 6-9 were before.

I find this a wee bit clumsy.
Am I ignorant or is Calc there lacking in convenience?

Andreas:

I believe this is using the 'insert cut cells' feature in Excel. I believe that OOo does not have this shortcut. You have to insert a row and then move them over, otherwise you overwrite them.

It has been submitted as a feature request. You can look at it here and I suggest you vote for it: http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=21280
More votes might make it get done quicker.
