I do appreciate the fact that OpenOffice is a open-source suite of
applications and I have been impressed with the increase in efficiency and
range of tools that the last version offered to the discerning customers.
However, I have been regularly plagued by sudden inexplicable crashes of the
software and though I have always reported the errors through the error
reporting tool, I wonder whether any thought has gone into it.
I am also dismayed by the inordinate amount of time that it takes to
download the latest version of the software. Perhaps, one needs to do
something about it.

Perhaps you need a faster internet connection or a faster download site.
I can download the entire windows package with JRE (104 mb) in about 1
minute from USA-pair/
True, but not very helpful if a faster internet connection isn't an option.
Incremental updates (as now offered by Firefox and Thunderbird in their
latest releases, for example) would no doubt be a very welcome
improvement for OOo users with slow internet connections.
