Hi Phalbe,

First, it sounds like the extensions (.doc or .odt etc) are hidden in Windows. If you open up My Documents and go to Tools - Folder Options you can change this. Pick the second TAB across the top (VIEW) and down a bit you'll see checkbox next to "Hide Extensions for Known Files". Uncheck this and click ok.

If the icons for your files are large and you still don't see the three letter extension, Click on the View pulldown menu and pick details.

Now that you can see which have .doc, .xls, .ppt extensions, you can fix the second problem. Right-mouse click a Microsoft Office file, and select Open With... on the menu that pops up. The "Open With" menu has an choice at the bottom, "Choose Program...", pick this.

On the box that pops up, the Microsoft Office program probably shows up, you want to hightlight, then click the checkbox for "Always Use This Program" and hit Ok.

And then your Office files will open in Word by double-clicking nad will have the correct icon.

Hope this helps!

Hi, folks.

I know it's bad form to post as soon as you subscribe, and I know this list is supposed to be for people who *want* to use OO, but I have a problem and don't know where else to ask:

I was using Word, which is the standard for our county government, and, then, something went wrong with it. I d/l'ed OO and started using Writer. Our computer guy came and fixed Word and I need to go back to it. But I can't figure out how to do that.

Writer is the default program that I see when I look at "My Documents," so I can't tell which ones really were written in Writer and which weren't. I'd like to start by making the Office suite programs the default ones, but I can't figure out how to do that.

If anyone would please point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.
