I will practically guarantee you that is your problem. I don't know much about Ubuntu, so I don't know how hard/easy this is to do, but I would install the version of OOo from the OOo website. It seems like at least half of the distro-specific versions of OOo are buggered up in some fashion.
As an aside, one of the few advantages of using Windows is that there is only one version of OOo for it. So if it doesn't work, you know it's something fouled up on your own system.
