I use OOo all the time and my machines are all more powerful than yours.
First, a 556 KB is large in comparing my OOo documents. OOo stores it's
files in compressed format.
How many pages and are there graphics embedded within the graphic? Or
worse, are their active web links that could be slowing you down?
My wife has a document that is 226 pages of text and is only 183K in
size on her computer.
