Regarding the smooth dissolve transition have you tried the "fade through
black effect"? It seems very similar to what you describe. Actually it does
not do cross fading as you seem to suggest, but it is anyway rather neat.

The second issue you mentioned (not being able to project the slideshow on a
secondary screen) is a very well known problem. It is probably one of the
most voted desirable features, but unfortunately, at least the last time I
checked it was marked as a "please help" feature and it was not in the
roadmap.
