Dave,
Thanks for the correction. It appears that you cc'd me and not the OP.
If you did that separately, please accept my apology.

Hi Sue,
You won't find powerpoint here, but you can download OpenOffice.org
for free. One of its modules, Impress, will open, edit and save
powerpoint files. Go to www.openoffice.org and click the 'download'
button. Choose your language and operating system (if it's windows,
pick the JRE version, that has the java runtime environment included)
and pick any of the download sites; one that's close may be better. If
the download speed is slow, cancel and try another site. Once you've
downloaded the file, you'll have to unzip it, then run setup.exe that
you'll find in the directory that you chose to unzip into.
When your son has finished his project, make sure that he saves it in
Microsoft powerpoint format.

Just a small correction to Anthony's, otherwise excellent, advice:
I believe you are running Windows, in which case the file you will
download (something like "OOo_2.0.2_Win32Intel_install_wJRE.exe") is a
self extracting installation file. So you do _not_ need to unzip it or
run "setup.exe". Just find where on you computer the file was downloaded
to (maybe your "Desktop") and double click on it to start the
unpack/install process.
