I also have created business cards. Use Avery 5371 if you want double sided
business cards. Avery 5871 willl print well on one side, however will smear on
the other (using an ink jet printer) (though they're designated for Laser
printers). I also use the Avery High Gloss business cards for putting magnets
on the back.

Any how, once you're in OpenOffice: Click File>New>Labels. A label dialog box
will appear. Make sure the labels tab is selected. In the brand type box,
pick the brand you are using, I use Avery Letter Size. In the box below it
pick the 5371 business card - white. Next, click the Options tab and click
(select) the Synchronize contents box. Click New Document. Only using the
first label (business card), design your label. When you have everything the
way you want it on the first card, click the synchronize button. This will
copy the first card to all the other cards. It all looks good, right? However,
up in the OpenOffice menu bar, click Format>Page. A page style popup box
willl appear. Click the page tab. Under the paper format dialog, increase the
height to 11.20" (this will insure the bottom row of labels will print
properly.) Using cheap paper in draft mode, print your creation. Using a
bright light, allign your test paper to actual 5371 stock and hold up to
the light. If everything lines up the way you want, great! Print you
business cards. If you see problems, correct the problems on the first label
and re-Synchronize. Then reprint a test. Once everything is as you want it,
print out the card stock. Don't forget to save your work!

Open a document, set the page size to the size of the card. set margins
to about 0.15 inch
Paste in a logo graphic, if you have one.
Borders on paragraphs make great horizontal lines: insert a table if
you need verticals.
type in the name, address, etc. and format to fit.

Export as a PDF (open in Acrobat Reader to confirm)
Adjust spacing, font size, etc (I usually tweak it a few times).

When you have a good PDF, email it to a print shop. I use Kinkos
because they will print my PDF 10-up on 8.5 x 11 card stock.
Specify which type of stock you want, matte or glossy.

They will cut them, too, which is better than doing it yourself unless
you have a very good paper cutter (like a RotoTrim).
