I am using version 2.0 of OpenOffice.org. My problem is :

When attempting to add an existing JRE into OpenOffice, a misleading error
message can be returned.

I installed OO and attempted to add my existing JRE into it.

My JRE is located in '/usr/local/lib/java/jdk/jre'

I browsed to that directory in the [Add...] dialog in
[Tools]->[Options...]->OpenOffice.org/Java and clicked [Select].

OpenOffice then put up a dialog saying:

"The folder you selected does not contain a Java runtime environment".

I tried repeatedly with different directories, but nothing was working.

Eventually I 'straced' OpenOffice and determined that rather than being a
missing file in my directory, it was the fact that a Java class called
JREProperties was missing from my OpenOffice installation.

The reason it was missing was that I installed my version of OpenOffice via
the debian packages and did not spot the openoffice.org-java-common package
was not installed as part of the process.

However, it would have been nice if rather than suggest that my JRE was
missing, OpenOffice would do a check for "JREProperties.class" (and possibly
other Java related components) before allowing the "Use a Java runtime
environment" checkbox to be ticked.

If it had put up a warning that my installation did not contain all the
required components to allow Java to be used, I would have gone looking for
missing packages immediately rather than trying to debug my Java installation
(which is fine).

Cheers,
        David
