     An observation first. It seems that Quattro Pro 12 has the same 
problem of trying to figure out Excel's formatting as OOo does. Neither 
one have been able to get it exactly right. That is why opening the file 
in Excel and then closing it allows OOo Calc to open it. Excel make some 
minor adjustments.
     In this case, perhaps using another file format other than Excel might 
work better. *.cvs for example. At least I think the CVS format is rather 
well known which would make the conversion probably more accurate. Macros 
(if any) and cell formulas would have to be rewritten anyway. Just a 
thought.
