[I don't have your printer so this may not be relevant.]

What did you do to "edit the default Writer template"?  I have had no problems 
with printer defaults when I eventually worked out that I could create a new 
template with everything set as required, and then make the new template the 
default. The installation default templates are owned by root, so a user 
cannot write to them.
