It is actually a feature. What is happening is that they "style" you are starting off with has one font and when you hit return the next specified style is used. You can see the name of the style being used to the left of the font name. Most of the time you probably want the "Default" style. To see more about styles look in "Help" -> "Contents" -> Styles. There is also very good document at http://documentation.openoffice.org on Styles which is well worth reading as it can help make your usage of OpenOffice.org much easier. Note: also 1.1.0 is quite old, and 2.0.2 has been released a number of months ago has has many new features and bug fixes compared to 1.1.0.
